In 2008, the United Nations decided that June 8th would be designated as “World Oceans Day”. We celebrate this day as a way to raise awareness of all of that the ocean gives us, from the oxygen we breathe to the abundance of biodiversity within its waters. This day serves as a reminder that we must collectively work together to strengthen the protection of the oceans so that we have a healthy planet for generations to come.
Ocean health touches on multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Compass Group is committed to doing our part. For over fifteen years, we have partnered with the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program to source sustainable seafood and ensure the health of our oceans.
There are ways that you can support healthy oceans:
Reduce your plastic use. An estimated 8 million tons of plastic enters our oceans every year. Choose reusables whenever possible.
Eat sustainably. Pick sustainable seafood when dining out or cooking at home. Visit www.seafoodwatch.org to find great sustainable options.
Reduce your carbon footprint. The rise in ocean temperatures affects sea life. Cut your footprint at home by turning off the lights and unplugging electronics when not in use, adjusting your thermostat or choosing to ride your bike instead of driving.
Volunteer for a coastal cleanup. If you’re near a coast, grab your friends and family and help clean our coastlines. Click here to get tips for starting a cleanup.
